BIO STATEMENT
Michelle Lynn Hermiston, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor and Dean of the College of Health Sciences at VinUniversity in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Chief Scientific Officer at the Center for Innovation in Health Sciences. She is also Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, where she continues to serve as Senior Advisor to the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center Global Cancer Program. Her global health work focuses on strengthening research, education, and clinical-care capacity for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and serious hematologic disorders, particularly in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. She has led the development of Vietnam’s first Ministry of Health–approved pediatric hematology-oncology training program and helped establish the Vietnamese Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Cell Therapy Consortium. At VinUniversity, her global health interests interface directly with her leadership role in building research infrastructure, mentoring clinician-scientists, developing international collaborations, and advancing equitable access to high-quality cancer care and translational research in low- and middle-income settings.
Recent Global Health Projects
Pediatric hematology-oncology training in Vietnam. I led the development and implementation of the first Ministry of Health–approved pediatric hematology-oncology training program in Vietnam, in partnership with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Vietnam. The program is now in its seventh intake and is designed to strengthen local specialist capacity for diagnosing, treating, and researching childhood cancers and hematologic disorders.
Vietnamese Pediatric HSCT and Cell Therapy Consortium. I helped establish the Vietnamese Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Cell Therapy Consortium to support collaboration, training, and infrastructure development for advanced pediatric cancer and immune-based therapies in Vietnam. This work connects my clinical and research expertise in pediatric hematology/oncology, immunotherapy, and global cancer care with my current leadership role at VinUniversity.
