In 2014, The Department was ranked first among academic pediatric departments by US News and World Report, making it the 11th consecutive year that the Department has been either first or second. Established Centers of Emphasis are an important internal strength related to research. There are currently nine Centers of Emphasis that are led by faculty in the Department of Pediatrics: the Center for Applied Genomics, the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics, the Center for Biomedical Informatics, the Center for Clinical Effectiveness, the Center for Injury Research and Prevention, the Center for Childhood Cancer Research, the Center for Autism Research and the PolicyLab Center, and the Center for Health Care Disparities Research.  All of these centers have fostered growth and recruitment as well as new collaborations.

Two hundred and eighty-seven members of the Department of pediatrics perform basic, translational and clinical research.  In addition to other external funding supporting our investigators, members of the department are the recipients of 140 R-series awards, 37 institutional and individual Career Development Awards and nine Training Grants from the National Institutes of Health.  We are consistently among the top two in NIH research grants among children’s hospitals and departments of pediatrics. The Department of Pediatrics is committed to excellence in clinical care, research and education.
