Research Topic: Diseases of organelle biogenesis and protein transport

Mammalian cells are organized into specialized organelles, membrane compartments that perform specific functions in the cell. Improper formation of these organelles can result in defects in protein transport and diseases. I am investigating the role of membrane trafficking proteins mutated in the genetic disease, Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome, in melanosome biogenesis in pigment cells. Melanosomes are a special type of tissue specific organelle, present only in cells that produce melanin. Understanding the mechanisms of melanosome biogenesis serves as an important model to increase our understanding of other tissue specific organelles, disrupted in Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome, that are crucial for function in processes such as blood clotting and immune system responses to infections.

Teaching Interests:
I am interested in teaching molecular and cellular biology courses to both biology students and non-majors. I would like to develop an introductory biology course for non-majors that uses a set of special topics on diseases, biotechnology, and current issues of interest in biology and medicine to teach molecular and cellular biology.

Courses Taught:
Systems Neuroscience, Spring 2016, Carnegie Mellon University
