National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Research Career Development (K12) Award Fellowship Application: Clinical Research Training in Emergency Medicine
Those interested in becoming an Emergency Care Scholar must have demonstrated prior interest in emergency care research and be committed to an academic career in this field. Only clinicians are eligible.
Scholars without prior formal clinical research training enroll in the two- to three-year Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) degree program and take classes and work alongside MSCE trainees with interests in the application of epidemiologic methods to other health-related issues and questions. These Scholars receive an MSCE degree upon completion of the training program. Scholars who already have been trained in clinical research receive highly individualized training that could include enrollment in the PhD in Epidemiology degree program, if desired.

Hypothermia and Resuscitation Training Institute at Penn (HART) is an intensive two-day "boot camp" designed to educate providers on in-hospital care of cardiac patients and equip them to be champions in post-arrest care. Participants will have the opportunity to learn through:
Practical, intensive training and education sessions: HART is a first-of-its-kind training course targeted at hospital-based resuscitation champions. The small class size allows for close interaction between participants and faculty as well as providing crucial hands-on time with the cooling devices and post-resuscitation materials.
Hands-on training using state-of-the-art medical simulation equipment: We use realistic human patient simulators and utilize this remarkable technology to provide the best possible instruction for participants.
By the conclusion of the course, each attendee will have a firm grasp of developing and implementing a comprehensive in-hospital high quality resuscitation program.
The Resuscitation Fellows with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania will work closely with faculty and staff from the Department of Emergency Medicine's Center for Resuscitation Science, who are dedicated to research and training surrounding cardiac arrest and resuscitation with the goal of improving survival from sudden cardiac arrest.
The resuscitation fellow will be highly engaged in research related to CPR quality, biomarker studies and interventions to improve cardiac arrest outcomes. In addition, the Resuscitation Fellow will engage in clinical rounds of patients who have been resuscitated from cardiac arrest and are undergoing therapeutic hypothermia.
This position also includes 4-6 clinical shifts/month as an attending in the emergency department at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Position is contingent on funding.
