Barbara J. Maschak-Carey, MSN, CDE

Barbara J. Maschak-Carey, RN, MSN, CDE is a Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa. Her experiences include research nurse in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and Study Coordinator for the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications study (EDIC), the follow up to the DCCT.

She was the program coordinator of the Diabetes Self-Management Training Program at Penn and co-chair of the design of the Diabetes Disease Management program for the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Ms. Maschak-Carey has been involved in diabetes care and education for many years. She has been active in the American Diabetes Association at the local, regional and national levels including election to the national Board of Directors and chairperson of the Council on Education. Most recently she has been elected to President, Health Care and Education of the American Diabetes Association, Mid-Atlantic region.

Ms. Maschak-Carey was the 1993 recipient of the ADA's national award for Outstanding Health Care Professional in the field of diabetes. Currently, Ms. Maschak-Carey is Program Coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania site for the Look AHEAD study, an NIH funded multicenter clinical trial studying the long-term effects of weight loss in type 2 diabetes.
