The Pennsylvania Get Smart Program is Happy to Announce the Kid’s Art Competition Winners!

Thank you to all participants in our second annual Get Smart about Antibiotics Kids’ Art Competition! Approximately 11 million antibiotic prescriptions are given to children without good medical reason unnecessary each year. This misuse contributes to the growing worldwide threat of antibiotic resistance. We commend you and your parents or guardians in taking a step to educate other children, parents, teachers and everyone about this growing problem.

This year’s dedicated judges were: Annie Beer, Highlights Children Magazine; Lauren Torso, Allegheny County Health Department; Judith Kinman, University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Nicole Hackman, Penn State Hershey Medical Center; Dr. Christopher Carr, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Tyson Brown, National Science Teachers Association

This year we made a few changes to the competition. We opened the competition to children 12 years old and younger. Also, children were able to submit art on three topics, hand hygiene, vaccinations, and proper use of antibiotics. Lastly, instead of only drawings, children were encouraged to submit all forms of art from drawings to posters to stories or poems. If you still 12 years or younger before deadline for next year’s submission, we welcome you to enter 2015 competition. Details will be announced mid-2015.
