Description of Research Expertise

Research Interest Summary:
The main interest of this group is the non invasive detection of lipid metabolic changes in response to anticancer drugs and differentiation therapy using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and MRI and optical imaging. Changes in lipid metabolites are monitored using 1H, 13C and 31P MR spectroscopy in perfused cell systems and in in vivo tumor models to determine potential biochemical markers for the detection of tumors and their early response to therapy. Changes in metabolite levels are correlated with information obtained from near-infrared optical imaging using enzyme-activated fluorescent contrast agents to detect enzyme activity in situ.

A number of molecular imaging projects are active in the laboratory including the design, characterization and implementation of optical contrast agents for the detection of phospholipase, choline kinase and matrix metalloproteinase activity, and development of MR methods and contrast agents for detection of apoptosis and noninvasive detection of fatty liver and early stages of liver disease.
