Description of Research Expertise

Research Interests

A primary goal of my research is to understand the mechanisms by which beryllium causes a chronic granulomatous disease. Several approaches to determining the mechanisms of beryllium granulomas are utilized. HLA Class II alleles in patients were identified and compared to exposed but unaffected workers. The alleles associated with beryllium disease and sensitization are being compared to the occupational history to see if gene-environmental relationships can be elicited.

A second goal of the research is to understand the granulomatous process in sarcoidosis. Lung specimens have been obtained and microbiome analysis performed to try to indentify organisms that might be involved in the etiology or natural course of sarcoidosis. In addition, analysis of proteome of the blood is taking place to try to identify signatures of particular phenotypes of sarcoidosis.

A third research goal is to utilize helium and zenon MRI to further understand the physiology of the lung and also to ultimately help diagnose and follow obstructive and interstitial lung disorders.
