Dual Degree Application - Special Instructions

MD/MBE

Those interested in the MD/MBE program should follow the instructions posted on Penn Medicine's website. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Please contact mbe-info@mail.med.upenn.edu for more information.

MD/MBE applicants do NOT need to include their Penn graduate transcripts in their application. Penn Med students who were Penn undergrads DO need to request an official transcript for their application file.

The MBE application fee is waived for current UPenn MD students applying for the dual degree.

MD/MBE applicants may use the same letters of recommendation used for Penn Med for their Penn MBE application. To do so, the applicant must contact their recommenders and have them email Helene Weinberg at Penn SOM authorizing her to forward a copy of the letter to us.

Aside from the three points above, MD/MBE applicants should follow the instructions on the 'Information for Applicants' page.

MD/MBE applicants are eligible to apply for the Bellet Scholarship, awards of $5,000 to be applied to MBE course tuition. Bellet applications can be submitted at any time, but are only reviewed and awarded in the Spring. This year's deadline for applications is March 15, 2012. Download the Bellet Application.

JD/MBE

Students who wish to apply to the JD/MBE program should gain admission to the Law School before applying to the MBE program. Students may apply to the MBE program during their first year of Law School. This provides students an excellent opportunity to further explore and refine their interests before submitting an MBE application, and any interested 1L student should contact mbe-info@mail.med.upenn.edu to discuss options.

Please note that in general, applicants wishing to begin taking BIOE classes in the Fall should have their application in by the previous April 1, but applications are accepted on a rolling basis and can be accepted up until the first of September. If you are working in a different time frame, please inform mbe-info@mail.med.upenn.edu of your intentions.

LLM/MBE

The Law School and the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy have a joint admission process for this program. Each school makes its own determination concerning admission to the program, and the applicant will be jointly admitted only if both schools agree to admit the applicant. Applicants will submit materials to both schools, indicating that they wish to be considered for the dual degree program. Applicants should comply with the requirements for each school, but may use the same letters of recommendation. LLM/MBE applicants should follow the instructions on the 'Information for Applicants' page, indicating that you are also applying for the LLM.

The MBE application fee is waived for current UPenn LLM students applying for the dual degree.

DMD/MBE

DMD students must apply during their first year of Dental School. Students who wish to pursue this dual degree must gain approval from the Office of Academic Affairs before submitting the MBE application. Contact Caryn Stivelman, 215.898.4557, for more information.

DMD students should follow the application instructions on the 'Information for Applicants' page. The application fee for the MBE program is waived for current DMD students applying to the dual degree.

MSW/MBE

July 2008 - Grady et al - "Conclusion: Ethics education has a significant positive influence on moral confidence, moral action, and use of ethics resources by nurses and social workers." American Journal of Bioethics article

This joint program is open to FULL-TIME MSW students in both advanced clinical and advanced macro social work practice tracks. Current and prospective students must apply to BOTH the Master of Social Work and the Master of Bioethics independently. Applicants must note on both the MSW and the MBE applications their intention of completing the dual degree. Admittance into one program does not affect admission to the other. The MBE application fee is waived for current UPenn MSW students applying for the dual degree.

MSEd or EdD/MBE

Masters and doctoral GSE (Graduate School of Education) may earn either a Master's or PhD in Education and the MBE degree. Interested students should contact mbe-info@mail.med.upenn.edu to discuss this dual degree.

The MBE application fee is waived for current UPenn GSE students applying for the dual degree.

MSN/MBE

Nursing PhD/MBE
