Bioethics Online Community

Information for Alumni

Congratulations! Now what?

First, register with the Penn Alumni community! From there you have access to a new email account: you@alumni.upenn.edu. This service allows you to keep 1 email forever and change the forwarding information as advancements in your career lead to email changes. Penn's alumni site is here.

Having this permanent email is a huge benefit in that you will always receive announcements from our alumni listserve.

Upon graduation you will be automatically moved from "bioegrad" to "bioealum," where you'll receive information specific to the MBE program: about lectures and programs of interest, jobs, grant and research opportunities, and invitations to alumni society meetings and other social and networking events. We also use this listserve to ask for updates periodically - please keep us informed about your post-MBE life - new positions, publications, new family, anything!

Alumni Society

Two times a year, MBE alumni have the opportunity to attend alumni committee meetings. There is a small dedicated group of alumni who put together programs such as: Penn's ASBH reception, plan lectures, and create networking opportunities for fellow alums.

UPDATE!!! UPenn MBE Alumni Group on LinkedIn now up and running. If you did not receive your invitation or if you are having problems, please email Nora Jones.

Background: Each year students approach the MBE office asking about grants or other funding available for travel to conferences, competitions, and other bioethics-related events. Our answer, up to now, has always been, ‘unfortunately, we have nothing to offer.’

The Bioethics Alumni Society took this on as a challenge! It was decided that the May graduation ceremony and celebration would be an ideal place and time to solicit donations from current alumni, as new graduates are welcomed to the Alumni Society.

A testimonials from Heidi Fisher, our first MBE Travel Fund Recipient. Heidi presented a case study at the 2007 North American Case Research Association conference:
The annual NACRA conference was an enriching experience, both as a presenter and an observer. I applied much of what I learned in MBE classes to the bioethics case I wrote for the conference, which will be published in their journal. Being at the conference allowed me to meet other authors and professors with whom I may be able to collaborate with in the future. One author contacted me about advising him on a new case he is writing that has some bioethical aspects. I believe that attending the conference has greatly contributed to my career as a bioethics student at Penn and has led to my first publication.
