Internship Opportunities
The Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC):
The Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) is a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization that offers students and professionals the opportunity to provide medical relief to children in developing countries. Started by a Penn grad, FIMRC works with clinics and hospitals in communities in Central and South America, Uganda and India. Through their Global Health Volunteer Program, FIMRC provides access to health care for millions of underprivileged and medically under served children, while providing an invaluable experience for volunteers. They are currently accepting applications from groups or individual volunteers. For more information and to apply, visit www.fimrc.org.
The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law:
The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law seeks interns for two current projects. If interested, please send your CV and cover letter to Dr. Nora Jones. At this time, applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The intern would not have to be in DC full time, but should be able to make regular trips. These internships are unpaid, but the experience (in addition to being fruitful in its own right) could turn into a final project.
Internship regarding Neuroscience and Healthcare:
With the prospect that important deliberations about healthcare will occur in Congress, the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law in Washington, DC, will again assume an important role in ensuring that mental health issues are considered. New advances in neuroscience will likely be a part of these discussions, yet the ethical and public policy implications for people with mental illness—relating to such diverse issues as privacy, screening, cost-containment and eligibility for benefits—are just beginning to be identified, let alone understood. The Bazelon Center is seeking an intern to assist in analyzing these and related matters and in developing written materials that identify major issues they present for public policy in terms accessible to decision makers and mental health advocates.
Internship regarding the Collision of Medical Ethics and Mental Health Practice:
There is a substantial body of research documenting the effectiveness of services and supports that allow people with serious mental illness to lead stable, productive lives in their communities. As has been documented by the U.S. Surgeon General and the Institute of Medicine, few people with serious mental illness actually have access to services allowing them to benefit from this science. For them, the consequences are not only very poor health outcomes, but also the intrusion of the legal system in such forms as incarceration in jails and prisons, civil commitment to psychiatric hospitals and various forms of coercive treatment. The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law in Washington, DC, is seeking an intern to research and develop a report on the professional ethical issues at play when substandard care systematically results in such untoward outcomes.
