THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM AT THE CENTER FOR BIOETHICS

The Center for Bioethics has a lively, active Summer Intern Program that draws students from Penn as well as nationally. Summer interns work with a faculty member on a research project, or on some type of scholarly pursuit. Many have earned article authorships or have gone on to work at the Center in one capacity or another for long periods of times. We have special events, talks, and pizza lunches for the interns, to ensure an experience that is both fun and educational. Find out more...

Other Undergraduate Study in Bioethics at the university of pennsylvania

The Health and Societies major provides an exciting, intellectually-coherent and practical education for undergraduates preparing for careers in the health professions or for a health care specialization in fields such as law, government, journalism, and business. The major is organized around a set of core courses drawn from across the university, in addition to a second set of courses tailored to fit each student's particular interests. Identifying this cluster of courses is a critical part of the Health and Societies major, and is to be undertaken by each student in consultation with a faculty member. Combining both the freedom of an individualized major with the coherence of a core curriculum, Health and Societies challenges students to participate actively in the planning of their education and their future. The core courses are designed to provide the requisite skills and knowledge for later courses and research experiences in the Health and Societies clusters as well as serving as a solid foundation for health-related careers or graduate study.

Specific Programs of Study
Students can choose from a number of options:

The "Bioethics and Society" template provides a strong grounding in the history of science and medicine as well as its sociological trends. Click here to view the template.

An Individualized Concentration allows students to tailor their course of study to more specifically reflect their academic interests. Some students choose to pursue a concentration in applied bioethics, focusing on health policy, health law, health care management and bioethical trends drawing together all three areas.

Interested students need to apply to the program by spring of Sophomore year.

Penn Bioethics Society

The Penn Bioethics Society is comprised of a group of undergraduate students at the University of Pennsylvania dedicated to broadening the discussion of medicine, biotechnology, philosophy, health care, and ethics. We seek to raise awareness of ethical issues by participating in, and creating outlets for, discussion and education. In particular, we publish the Penn Bioethics Journal as the nation's premier peer-reviewed undergraduate bioethics journal furthering recognition of outstanding contributions from an international population of undergraduate students. Additionally, we focus on expanding boundaries of Penn undergraduates by hosting campus-wide events including formal lectures, case study presentations, public debates, debriefing of current bioethical issues and casual student led conversations. The Society creates a dynamic and inclusive environment to gain pertinent and timely information on bioethical issues at the University of Pennsylvania.

Penn Bioethics Journal

The Penn Bioethics Journal (PBJ) is the nation's premier peer-reviewed, undergraduate bioethics journal. Established in 2004, the Journal features and provides a venue for the contributions of undergraduates to the field of bioethics. PBJ, embracing the interdisciplinary focus of bioethics, reviews and publishes reports of empirical research and analysis of previous work --addressing debates in medicine, technology, philosophy, public policy, law, theology and ethics among others. The biannual Journal additionally features news briefs and editorials reviewing current bioethical issues, as summarized by our undergraduate editorial staff. Undergraduate editors and authors have a unique opportunity to get involved with the peer-review process through the collaborative and rigorous review and preparation of PBJ. With an audience ranging from top contributors to the field to a broader public seeking unbiased information, the Penn Bioethics Journal scholastically involves all undergraduates interested in the extensive field of bioethics.

The editorial staff also focuses on expanding boundaries of Penn undergraduates by hosting campus-wide events through the Penn Bioethics Society. These include formal lectures, case study presentations, public debates, debriefing of current bioethical issues and casual student led conversations.
