After 24 years in private practice as well as maintaining a clinical faculty appointment at the University of Pennsylvania teaching residents along with hosting residents for monthly rotations in my practice, I decided to join as a full-time faculty member in the department of neurology and the general neurology division. I continue to maintain a very busy clinical practice in neurology with five of my own sessions weekly often working with residents and medical students during these. I also staff two resident clinic sessions a week and have a single session at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The latter session is split between seeing pediatric Tourette syndrome patients and adult trisomy 21 patients within the CHOP system. I routinely work with our residents on a daily basis.
In addition to my own clinical practice, I also spend 8 weeks a year attending on the inpatient neurology service where I have daily interaction with the residents and medical students.
Twice annually I travel to Tanzania to supervise resident training in global health and neurology by providing a broad experience in a rural and low resource area of Africa.
In addition to providing clinical neurology training to our residents, I also provide a global health experience for those residents who have an interest and choose to accompany me on twice annual trips to a rural part of Northern Tanzania. I have developed a neurology program there that delivers both outpatient and inpatient care as well as provides training to Tanzanian doctors, clinical officers and nurses regarding the evaluation and treatment of neurologic disorders. A large focus of our program has become the long term management of epilepsy to better the lives of those individuals affected with this disorder.
