Dr. Nazarian is Professor of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Cardiac Electrophysiology section of the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Nazarian earned his M.D. degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School. He then completed serial fellowships in Cardiovascular Medicine and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following completion of his training he joined the Electrophysiology Faculty at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. At Johns Hopkins he developed a busy clinical practice as well as an active portfolio of National Institutes of Health funded research. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Ventricular Arrhythmia Ablation service by 2014. In 2016, Dr. Nazarian joined the Electrophysiology Faculty at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he will continue to focus on his clinical interests including:
• Atrial and ventricular arrhythmia substrate identification and ablation
• Optimal catheter ablation strategies for longstanding persistent atrial fibrillation
• Prevention of sudden cardiac death
• Implantation and management of permanent pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization systems
• Arrhythmia risk management in patients with neurologic disease
• Management of arrhythmias in cardiac sarcoidosis
• Management of arrhythmias in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Dr. Nazarian served as a mentor to medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine during the first 9 years of his career and will replicate this interaction at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He is an appointed member of the Heart Rhythm Journal Editorial Board, the official journal of the Heart Rhythm Society. He is also a fellow of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and the Heart Rhythm Society.
Dr. Nazarian is a clinical and translational investigator in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and is particularly interested in integration of advanced imaging modalities for optimization of procedural success for ablation of complex ventricular arrhythmia in structural heart disease. In addition to his medical expertise, Dr. Nazarian has a Ph.D. degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has published extensively on the anatomy of the ventricular arrhythmia substrate. In his arrhythmia imaging laboratory, he oversees a team of individuals dedicated to facilitating atrial and ventricular arrhythmia research and clinical care within an academic medical center environment. Dr. Nazarian has been and continues to serve as the principal investigator for several grants from the National Institutes of Health to characterize the substrate for malignant arrhythmia.
