Scott Kasner, MD

Kasner Scott Kasner, MD, is Associate Professor of Neurology and Director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He has completed coursework toward a Masters' Degree in Clinical Epidemology. Dr. Kasner's primary field of interest is the treatment and prevention of stroke. His research training in stroke epidemiology was supported by a K23 award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and a member of the National Advisory Committee of the American Stroke Association. He was the recipient of the Michael Pessin Stroke Leadership Award granted by the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Kasner has been an author of over 100 publications.

Dr. Kasner has been a leader in evidence-based treatment of stroke. He recently was the primary editor of a textbook that focused on evidence-based stroke treatment and prevention. He also recently was the senior author for a Practice Parameter (evidence-based clinical practice guideline) of the American Academy of Neurology on the management of patients with stroke associated with patent foramen ovale.

Dr. Kasner was a steering committee member for the NINDS-funded multicenter Warfarin versus Aspirin for Symptomatic Intracranial Disease (WASID) trial, a pivotal study that has changed clinical practice worldwide, and is on the steering committee for the upcoming Stenting vs. Aggressive Medical Management for the Prevention of Recurrent stroke in Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS). He also serves a key role as the Chairman of the Clinical Endpoint Committee for the Insulin Resistance in Stroke (IRIS) trial and is a member of other adjudication and safety committees for a number of ongoing trials of acute stroke treatment and secondary stroke prevention.

Dr. Kasner's other research focuses on improving the rapid evaluation and management of patients with ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage. In addition to his research, Dr. Kasner directs the JCAHO-certified Stroke Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where stroke care is driven by compelling evidence whenever it is available. He has also been praised for his teaching, with three major teaching awards to date.
