The Written NUMi
The original NUMi consists of 20 multiple choice items in the following domains: number sense, tables & graphs, probability, and statistics. A short 8-item NUMi is also available. The NUMi can be scored as the number correct. If it is desired to use scoring categories the following levels are recommended based upon the distribution of scores in the validation studies.
Recommended Scoring Categories for the 20-item NUMi
Low health numeracy, 0-7
Low-average health numeracy, 8-12
High-average health numeracy, 13-17
High health numeracy, 18-20

Low health numeracy, 0-3
Medium health numeracy, 4-6
High health numeracy, 7-8
