Description of Clinical Expertise
1fd Dr. Lowenthal is a pediatrician with expertise in pediatric and adolescent HIV care. Between 2004 and 2008, she was the Clinic Director of the Botswana-Baylor Children's Clinical Centre of Excellence (Botswana, Africa), providing care and treatment for over 1500 HIV-infected children and adolescents. She is currently a staff physician at the Special Immunology Family Care Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she provides both general pediatric care and HIV-related care.71
Description of Research Expertise
46a Dr. Lowenthal's research is focused on issues of importance to international child health. The majority of her work relates to the care and treatment children and adolescents who are affected by HIV. She is currently Principal Investigator for two NIH R01 awards and an NIH training grant. She has active research collaborations in Botswana and the Dominican Republic. Her studies incorporate mixed-methods approaches and have included large cohort studies, clinical trials, and qualitative research. Dr. Lowenthal is a passionate mentor of junior investigators, particularly those focused on issues of importance to child health in resource-limited settings. She is a member of the Treatment Scientific Committee for the International Maternal Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Network and a member of the NIH-sponsored Adolescent HIV Prevention and Treatment Implementation Science Alliance (AHISA). At CHOP, she is Research Director for Global Health and Director of the Global Health Research Affinity Group. She is also the Director of the Developmental Core for the Penn Center for AIDS Research.e 29
