Description of Research Expertise

Research Interests:
The Arany lab studies cardiovascular metabolism, with a focus on the vasculature and striated muscles. We take a multidisciplinary approach, spanning from molecular biology and numerous ‘omic approaches to mouse models and human clinical studies. The objective is to make fundamental discoveries about cardiovascular metabolism and translate the findings to the clinic.

Examples of ongoing projects include:
1. Understanding metabolism in the vasculature, using state-of-the-art metabolomic tools. Much is known of metabolism in cancer cells, and in parenchymal cells, but the role of metabolism in vascular cell biology has received little attention.
2. CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing to identify novel genes that regulate vascular metabolism.
3. Using the powerful metabolic regulator PGC-1alpha as a discovery platform to probe the regulation of metabolism and its coordination with vessel biology in striated muscles.
4. Genetic studies of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), a disease that we now recognize as vascular in nature.
5. Using mouse models to evaluate the role of the vasculature and metabolism in the development of, and protection from, muscle dystrophy, in particular Duchenne Muscle Dystrophy.
6. Clinical echocardiographic and biomarker studies of cardiac function in preeclampsia, a disease that we now recognize as being significantly vasculotoxic to the heart.
