2012-2013 Fellowship in Public Services Psychiatry
The University of Pennsylvania Department of Psychiatry announces the creation of The Center of Excellence and Innovation in Public Psychiatry. The Center is offering subspecialty training for psychiatrists who plan careers in the public sector. Two one- or two-year post residency fellowships are available annually beginning in July 2011. The core of the fellowship consists of supervised work at collaborating public sector agencies in Philadelphia. Field placement is complemented by an academic curriculum that teaches clinical, leadership and administrative/management skills that will provide fellows with the tools and expertise to become part of the next generation of leaders in public psychiatry. Independent research projects are an integral part of this fellowship. In addition there are opportunities to earn MS, and MPH degrees as part of the fellowship experience.
Faculty:
Larry Real, MD, Medical Director of Horizon House and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania is Director of the Center of Excellence and Innovation in Public Psychiatry.
Trevor Hadley, PhD, Director of the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research serves as the primary mentor for fellows’ research activities along with other investigators in the CMPHSR.
Anthony Rostain, MD, MA, Director of Education for the Department of Psychiatry, serves as primary liaison to departmental and medical school teaching programs.
Additional clinical supervision will be provided by mentors recruited from the ranks of Philadelphia community psychiatrists.
Salary for the first year of the fellowship will be $75,000 plus benefits. Additional funding is available for conference and educational activities.

"Services System Research in Mental Health and Substance Abuse"
CMHPSR invites applications for one- and two-year post-doctoral research and policy fellowships. The program provides an excellent opportunity for social scientists to improve their knowledge of mental health systems and gain experience in applying qualitative and quantitative research methods to the evaluation of mental health systems. Services system research involves the study of the organization, financing, delivery and outcomes of care in the context of a changing relationship between the private and public sectors. The research focuses on vulnerable populations such as persons with serious mental illness, children with autism and the intersection of policy and practice. Some of the fellowships are partially supported by the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and others by a variety of NIH and other grant funds.
The Center seeks applications from persons with a PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree and a strong commitment to a career in mental health services research. Past applicants have come from both qualitative and quantitative backgrounds in disciplines such as anthropology, demography, social welfare policy, health administration, clinical, and community psychology. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Both recent graduates as well as those seeking to enhance their skills in new areas are welcome to apply. Stipends vary with experience. Postdoctoral Fellowship Opening
2013 – 2014 in School or Clinical Psychology
The Center for Mental Health Policy & Services Research, a division of the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry, offers Postdoctoral training for psychologists who plan clinical or research careers in autism intervention, beginning in July 2013. The Center has a reputation for close collaboration with local government agencies, school districts and early intervention providers. In 2008, the Center received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Institute of Education Sciences to conduct a randomized controlled trial of two autism interventions in the School District of Philadelphia. This unique collaboration between Penn and the district resulted in a lasting partnership through which we conduct research and provide training and support in autism intervention.
The Center also partners with UCLA and Rochester University on a multi-site longitudinal study of evidence-based practice for students with autism in mainstream and specialized placements. This research examines the implementation and sustainability of playground and classroom-based intervention in large public schools.
In addition to this research, the Center currently holds consultation contracts with the School District of Philadelphia and Philadelphia’s early intervention system to provide ongoing training and consultation to classroom-based staff who teach children with autism.
The core of the postdoctoral training offered consists of supervised consultation work at collaborating public elementary and early intervention sites in Philadelphia. Applicants will consult with general education and special education staff working with students diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Field experience is complemented by training in clinical, research, leadership and administrative / management skills that will provide fellows with the tools and expertise to become part of the next generation of leaders in psychology.
Successful applicants will have completed a doctoral degree in clinical or school psychology, or a related field. They will be familiar with school-based consultation models like performance feedback, have a foundational knowledge of behavioral strategies and Applied Behavior Analysis, and have demonstrated capacity to work effectively in schools to ensure successful academic and behavior plan implementation. Applicants will join other fellows in co-curricular activities, including assessment, intervention development, professional development and research. Applicants must be able to drive to local school districts.
