Modeling

DTI’s inability to model crossings led to HARDI-based paradigms; however, these are unable to model the tissue in the presence of water contamination, as in the case of edema. Pathology causes variation in the “free-water”.  Existing work in free-water modeling, requires subject-specific initialization and fits a DTI model, which is unable to model crossings. Alternatively, they are based on sequences that have long acquisition times, or are clinically impractical. We are developing multi-compartment models that model the contaminant in the tissue separate from a higher order model diffusion model to model the underlying fibers. This is based on a multi-shell acquisition scheme that is short and clinically feasible. The applicability of the free-water measures is currently being investigated in TBI, determining tumor types and effect of treatment.
