Requirements for SRL Services
A user must be assigned to a project of a registered Principal Investigator (PI).
A registered PI (or their Business Administrator (BA) or designated Lab Manager) may create projects and assign/manage users on those projects.
A Lab Manager may be designated by the PI or BA
- Get a PennKey (see next section below). All users and PIs will need a PennKey to access services.
- Register as Principal Investigator:
The PI with final spending authority for the project should use their PennKey to log in via this PROJECT MANAGEMENT link. If you are not already registered and are an active faculty member, you will be registered automatically. - Create a Project and Manage Users (for registered PIs, BAs, or designated Lab Managers ONLY)
- Paying with a Penn award grant using a 26-digit BEN budget number:
Use your PennKey to log in via this PROJECT MANAGEMENT link. Click on the corresponding link in the left menu based on your position (PI, BA, or Lab Manager). You may then create a project with your 26-digit number and authorize users. Here are some more in-depth instructions on how to do this: - Paying with a Penn non-award grant (such as start-up funds):
Have your BA enter the 26-digit number via PROJECT MANAGEMENT. Then follow the instructions directly above. - Paying from CHOP, Monell, Wistar, or the VA:

- Paying with a Penn award grant using a 26-digit BEN budget number:
- Set up a User Account to access our services and Scheduler: Click here
- Submit a Request for service (i.e. Request Training or book a reservation in Scheduler). You must have an active funding source to request Cytomics services. To check what funds you have been assigned to, click on "My User Profile" in the Menu on the Cytomics Main Webpage. Information about our services and instrumentation can be obtained through this page, as well as scheduling and training requests.
- For all Cell Sorting Reservations: An Active Biosafety Form is Required for each cell type that is being sorted. Once the form is submitted, it will automatically be sent to your PI for approval. After PI approval, our staff will review for final approval. Biosafety forms are good for 3 years and must be assigned to the user that is making the reservation. Getting a PennKey
All clients will need a PennKey to utilize our Facilities. If you do not have a PennKey and:
- are affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania (or UPHS), Wistar Institute, Monell Chemical Senses Center, or Philadelphia VA Hospital, call (215) 573-INFO to request a PennKey.
- are affiliated with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, please follow up with CHOP Pennkey Administration
- are not affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania or neighbors listed above, you or your BA should fill out the Registration Form. You will receive a Project ID and temporary PennKey to access services via this website.
