Description of Research Expertise

Clinical research is focused primarily on stroke in childhood, including arterial ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral venous thrombosis, and related cerebral vascular disorders. Current active research activities include an NIH-funded multicenter cohort study to evaluate safety/dose-finding for thrombolysis in pediatric stroke (TIPS); vascular effects of infection in pediatric stroke (VIPS); inflammatory coagulation markers in pediatric stroke; neurological manifestations of cerebral ischemic injury in sickle cell anemia (SITT and SWiTCH trials); a two-center cohort study of outcome predictors in childhood spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage; and a pilot study of treadmill training therapy in children recovering from stroke.

Related research activities through collaborations locally at CHOP/Penn and nationally include: hypothermia for pediatric cardiac arrest, and mechanisms of secondary injury in traumatic brain injury in children.

Description of Clinical Expertise

Childhood Stroke & acute brain injury due to cardiac arrest and traumatic brain injury. Primary clinical focus is stroke. As director of the CHOP Stroke Program, I oversee operation of clinical stroke care programs through a 24/7 rapid response neurovascular consultation service and multidisciplinary out-patient stroke follow-up clinic. The Stroke Program team includes expert care in neonatal stroke and cognitive effects of stroke by Dr. Lori Billinghurst, and effects of congenital heart disease on developing brain by Dr. Daniel Licht. Training elements include bedside & didactic teaching activities for physician and nursing staff within CHOP, and community outreach via a CME program for primary ED & pediatric practitioners. A pediatric stroke fellowship was established in July 2008.
