Dr. Gabriel is Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiation Oncology and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the Chief Oncology Informatics Officer (COIO) for the Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center (ACC) and Director of Informatics for the Department of Radiation Oncology. He has a technical background in computer science and engineering, clinical training in internal medicine, and subspecialty board certification in clinical informatics. As COIO for the ACC, he is responsible for developing and applying innovative approaches to technical infrastructure, workflows, and services that maximize the effective use of clinical information for quality improvement and clinical and translational research in cancer care. His primary areas of interest in informatics include data mining from clinical information systems, electronic phenotyping, database design and clinical data warehouse development, and ontologies and standardized terminologies. Nationally, he is a member of the American Society for Clinical Oncology's Health Information Technology Workgroup and the Epic Oncology Steering Board. He helped to lead the pilot project to develop a national radiation oncology registry.
