Description of Research Expertise

My primary research interests are in the neural mechanisms of sleep abnormalities caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol, molecular and cellular mechanisms of the hypothalamic control of sleep and wakefulness, and their ontogenetic development.

My research experience also includes: central regulation of normal and disordered breathing (obstructive sleep apnea), postnatal development of the central pathways involved in the regulation of breathing, molecular and cellular mechanisms of oxygen deficiency (hypoxia), and molecular mechanisms of metabolic disorders (diabetes).

In our studies, we combine in vivo and in vitro experimental approaches and use various methods of molecular and cellular biology, neuroanatomy, and electrophysiology.

My key methodological expertise includes gene expression profiling and quantification at the single cell level.
