Pharmacology Graduate Group

Welcome from the Graduate Chair

JBlendy PGG Chair

I am delighted to welcome you to our Pharmacology Graduate Group, home to more than 80 Ph.D. students and 80 faculty members, dedicated to research and training in this exciting, rapidly developing discipline. Our Group is one of the biggest, oldest and (as we firmly believe) one of the best graduate pharmacology programs in the nation. We are proud that our graduates become outstanding faculty in academia, take leading positions in industry, serve in governmental agencies, and pursue other successful careers in private and public sectors across the nation and around the world.

We enjoy unique research and educational opportunities provided by Penn - one of the leaders in academic biomedicine. Our Group is naturally aligned with the Department of Pharmacology, Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT), and the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennysylvania. Our faculty - renowned scientists from many departments in the School of Medicine, other Penn professional schools and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (the best research pediatric center in the nation) - serve as mentors and advisors to our students conducting cutting edge basic and translational studies in many areas of modern pharmacology and related disciplines.

The open research environment, collegial atmosphere, and the wide breadth of research approaches of the faculty are highly conducive to multidisciplinary collaborations. Research projects focus on diverse areas of biomedical sciences and involve molecular, cellular, animal and clinical studies. Our students publish results of their research in the top interdisciplinary journals including Nature, PNAS, Science, Cell, and, of course, leading specialty journals. An average time from enrollment to the completion of a Ph.D. degree in our Group is about 5.5 years. Most graduates embark on the post-doctoral studies in academia and industry. Numerous pharmaceutical, biomedical and biotech companies in Philadelphia area offer great opportunities to explore and pursue industrial careers. Close proximity to the national capital invites our graduates to explore careers in the NIH, the Department of Health and other government agencies.

Philadelphia - the historic Cradle of the Nation, a vibrant cosmopolitan city with world-caliber culture, science, architecture, parks, dining and entertainment - has experienced a true Renaissance in the last decade and now offers a highly attractive, yet affordable urban living. Those students wanting a challenging, broad-based, exciting program in pharmacology and biomedical sciences should strongly consider our Graduate Group. We welcome prospective students and faculty to explore joining our group and pursuing challenging, yet fulfilling lives dedicated to the improvement of human health and the quest for new knowledge.
