Who is Dr. Goldberg?

David Goldberg,MD, MSCE is a Hepatologist and Epidemiologist. His primary research focus is the management and delivery of health care to patients with end-stage liver disease. His research is driven by the increasing prevalence of cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease, in the face of a continued shortage of available organs for transplantation. He uses tools from epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, and empirical bioethics to identify disparities in access to transplant and organ allocation, and develop methods to minimize them. Dr. Goldberg has published about disparities in the current liver transplant organ allocation system, misuse of exception points for patients on the liver transplant waitlist, and regional disparities in access to liver transplantation. His work was among the first to examine the regional and individual transplant center variability in the use of exception points for waitlist candidates, and the pitfalls of the current organ allocation system. In the last three years, Dr. Goldberg’s research efforts have been supported by fellowship and career development grants from the NIH. His current research interests focuses on several areas of health care policy and delivery:

1. Barriers and factors associated with waitlisting for liver transplantation;
2. The impact of organ allocation and waitlisting policies on the broader population of patients with end-stage liver disease
3. Access to transplantation among U.S. veterans
4. Impact of the current liver transplant allocation system, focusing on exception point policies for waitlisted patients.
