What does genetic testing cost?

  • If patients meet clinical criteria for genetic testing, it is often covered by insurance. However, patients are still subject to co-pays and deductibles as with any other medical test.

  • There are many different genetic tests and the costs vary. Most patients pay $0–$250 out of pocket for testing.

What if my patient has questions about billing?

  • Patients should reach out to the genetic testing laboratory billing specialists for questions or concerns about the cost of genetic testing. 

What if my patient has more questions about genetic testing?

  • Refer your patient to the appropriate genetics clinic for further discussion.

What if my patient has concerns about their privacy and confidentiality?

  • Genetic test results are protected health information. Penn Medicine privacy practices apply to genetic test results.

  • The Affordable Care Act (ACA) does not allow the use of pre-existing conditions (like cancer or heart disease), to deny health insurance coverage or raise premiums. To learn more, visit About the ACA | HHS.gov.

  • The Genetic Information Non-discrimination Act (GINA) is another law with more protections.

    • GINA does not allow the use of genetic information by employers and health insurance companies. 

    • GINA does NOT apply to employers smaller than 15 employees. GINA does NOT apply for Life, Long-term Care, or Disability insurance.
