Being a mentor is creative and fulfilling work that begins with creating a tailored plan that fits both the mentee’s and mentor’s interests, goals and passion. My mentoring focus on providing a mentee an opportunity to focus her research in the clinical setting analyzing data from charts or in the lab, conducting bench-side work in molecular biology. At the same time mentorship is more than just science. It is very important to provide an optimal condition to grow, to mature, and to become independent. I treat this task with utmost diligence and responsibility. Frequently, I have seen the struggle of junior faculty or students. This led to my efforts of establishing In-Traning Section of the SCCM. Many initiatives started there during my tenure as a Chair continues until today. I continue to stay involved by being a mentor, participating in various initiatives championed by the University of Pennsylvania (CURF, Global Health), Society of Critical Care, or Cardinal Wyszynski University in Poland. At the latter one, I mentor several posts- and undergraduates students.

Description of Research Expertise

My research focuses on the three distinctive area: regulation of DNA expression in survivors after critical care illnesses, health care operation and medical decision-making processes and medical volunteerism. On the first subject, I am PI on the NIH funded project focusing on the long-term regulation of several genes expression after critical care event and their impact on the recovery of the patient after critical care illness and anesthesia/surgery. I am very interested in the medical decision-making process and health care operation as the primary determinant of patient recovery. I study the cognitive process, biases and the effect of emotional imprints on the decisions made by medical professionals. My prior work showed that numerous number of time the delivery of health services is superfluous and exposed the patient to unnecessary risk. Hospital system suffers negative economic consequences because of the suboptimal decision-making processes. Understanding and education about these processes are pivotal in the next healthcare system. Optimizing healthcare in the ICU is another area of interest. ICU environment is demanding with significant swings in demand. Developing improvements in the existing healthcare models, or envisioning the new healthcare models may have a potentially significant impact on individual and population health. Tele-ICU is my particular interest especially I the area of integration with wearables device and alternative models of healthcare delivery. Simulation is frequently utilized by me due to its versatility in discovering operating problems and providing the staff with unique experience. Adjusting the healthcare operation based on the availability, cultural specificity, and local demands is my passion I frequently pursue in the austere and remote settings.
