Xiaowei Xu, MD, PhD
Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Dermatology
Xiaowei Xu is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine, where he also serves as the Associate Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Xu graduated from Fudan University Shanghai School of Medicine and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He pursued postdoctoral training in pharmacology with Dr. William Sonntag at Wake Forest University and stem cell biology with Dr. George Cotsarelis at Penn. He completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in Dermatopathology at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic pathology and Dermatopathology. Dr. Xu has been involved in many clinical trials. He has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Web of Science. He has been consistently named among Philadelphia’s Top Doctors.
Research Interests
Dr. Xu's research focuses on melanoma, skin cancers, and immunotherapy, with a strong emphasis on developing innovative therapeutic strategies. A major focus of his lab is understanding the tumor microenvironment, immune evasion mechanisms, and the development of CAR T cells, gamma-delta T cells, and engineered extracellular vesicles for cancer therapy. Dr. Xu has been involved in translational research projects to identify predictive biomarkers for immunotherapy response and resistance, particularly in melanoma. His lab has developed patient-derived organoid and xenograft models to study tumor-immune interactions and test novel therapeutic approaches.
