The Bernard Fishman Endowed Professorship

Bernard FishmanEstablished in 2014 by Mr. Fishman’s wife, Annabelle, their son, Mark, and his wife, Jill, the Professorship honors the memory of Bernard Fishman (1923–2006). It is awarded to an Abramson Cancer Center faculty member in cardiology or oncology who focuses on the complex disease interfaces in these fields with a preference toward cardio-oncology.

Bernard Fishman was a Wharton graduate and former Chairman of Fishman & Tobin, a children’s apparel company. He was an activist in the Jewish community who served as Vice President of the Board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and President of Har Zion Temple, among his many philanthropic involvements.

Joseph R. Carver, MD

Joseph R. Carver, MD is a board-certified cardiologist. He is the Founding Editor of the American Journal of Managed Care and was a Senior Corporate Medical Director at Aetna U.S. Healthcare from 1992 to 2001, where he was responsible for new program development and directed the National Medical Excellence Program.

From 1999 to 2001, he was Co-Chairperson of the New Jersey and Michigan Working Groups that established voluntary agreements among the insurers in those states to cover the routine costs of clinical trial participation for cancer patients.

At the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Carver currently is the Bernard Fishman Endowed Professor, Chief of Staff and Chief Operating Officer of the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute. He is the Clinical Director of the Penn Cardio-Oncology Program and is one of the Founding Editors of the journal Cardio-Oncology. Dr. Carver is also the founding director of the Thalheimer Center for Cardio-Oncology and currently serves as Director Emeritus. His clinical practice is in the subspecialty of cardio-oncology. He was the recipient of the I.S. Ravdin Master Clinician Award in 2012.
