The Charles E.H. Upham Professorship of Pediatrics

Charles E.H. UphamThe Professorship was established in 1986 through the bequests of Charles E.H. Upham, MD (1890–1983) and his wife Dorothy L. Upham, and was created by the Perelman School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Upham, a distinguished alumnus of the Perelman School of Medicine Class of 1919 and a beloved pediatrician, and Mrs. Upham provided tuition at Ivy League colleges for 19 students. A World War I Navy veteran, Dr. Upham sailed his own craft to England and Bermuda and, following his retirement from medicine in 1961, taught celestial navigation at the Hayden Planetarium in New York City.

Beverly S. Emanuel, PhD

Beverly S. Emanuel, PhD is a human geneticist and molecular cytogeneticist. She investigates pediatric malformation syndromes, primarily those caused by abnormalities of human chromosome 22. She has focused on studying two particular disorders: 1) the the22q11.2 deletion syndrome, the most common human microdeletion syndrome; and 2) the t(11;22)(q23;q11), the most common recurrent non-Robertsonian constitutional translocation in man. In 2004, the multiple malformation syndrome resulting from malsegregation of the 11;22 translocation was designated as Emanuel Syndrome, a result of her ongoing research insights. Her studies are designed to investigate these disorders both at the molecular and clinical level. Molecular studies are aimed at discerning cytogenetic mechanisms responsible for causing recurrent rearrangements. Dissecting the unusual chromosomal architecture that gives rise to these disorders has commanded much of Dr. Emanuel’s research attention. Clinical studies are designed to uncover the genetic underpinnings of the birth defects and neuropsychiatric differences that are hallmarks of these syndromes.
