The John J. Mikuta, MD Professorship of Gynecological Oncology

Ruby W. Bradway

The Professorship was established in 2013 by the bequest of Ruby W. Bradway (1925–2009), who owned and operated numerous businesses in southern New Jersey and was very appreciative of the care of her physician John J. Mikuta, MD (1925–2013). A distinguished alumnus of both the University of Pennsylvania and the Perelman School of Medicine, Dr. Mikuta is considered a founding father of gynecologic oncology.

Dr. Mikuta completed his internship and residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Apart from two years in the U.S. Army, he spent his entire career at Penn Medicine.

Dr. Mikuta served as Chief of Penn Medicine’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology for 30 years. To foster the emerging specialty, he co-founded the Society of Gynecologic Oncology in 1969 and served as President in 1973. He was appointed to the Franklin Payne Professorship of Gynecological Oncology in 1985.

Dr. Mikuta was a loyal and beloved member of the Penn Medicine community. Former oncology fellows credited him personally for their decision to enter the field and recognized him by creating the honorary John J. Mikuta Society. In 2004, he co-founded the Association of Senior and Emeritus Faculty at the Perelman School, one of the first such organizations at a medical school. Throughout his career, he valued his connections to his classmates and colleagues at the Perelman School and gave generously to support medical education.

In 2008, to honor his many contributions to medicine and to the Perelman School, he received the inaugural Penn Medicine Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award.
