The John L. Miclot Professorship of Medicine

John L. Miclot

The Professorship was established in 2008 by a gift from Philips Respironics in honor of John L. Miclot. The Miclot chair is the first dedicated to the study of sleep disorders at the Perelman School of Medicine.

Philips Respironics is a global provider of sleep and respiratory products which became part of Philips Healthcare in March 2008. Mr. Miclot served as the company’s President and CEO from 2003 to 2008. Philips Respironics has established endowed chairs in sleep science at Penn, Stanford, Harvard, and the University of Wisconsin. Together, the chairholders form a new academic sleep research alliance dedicated to advancing the study of sleep disorders.

Allan I. Pack, MBChB, PhD

Allan I. Pack, MBChB, PhD serves as Chief of the Division of Sleep Medicine—the first independent sleep division to be established in the U.S. Dr. Pack is Director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology, a multidisciplinary center dedicated to exploring and understanding the basic mechanism of sleep and circadian rhythm, the pathogenesis of sleep disorders and the outcomes of therapy.

Dr. Pack received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, where he also researched mathematical models of lung function while earning his PhD. Dr. Pack has devoted his career to the study of the functions of sleep at a molecular level and the genetics of sleep and its disorders. In addition to his research activities, he treats patients with sleep apnea and other sleep disorders at the Penn Sleep Center. Dr. Pack has been named a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia Magazine every year since 2004 and is entered in America’s Top Doctors.
