The Schaeffer Professorship in Medicine

Adele K. and Harold G. Schaeffer

Adele K. and Harold G. Schaeffer established the Professorship in 2011.

For over 30 years, the Schaeffers have supported general medicine at Penn Medicine, with a particular interest in helping to care for the most underserved communities and patients. They have frequently supported the programs of Jack Ende, MD, which provide free medication and medical supplies to needy patients upon their release from the hospital.

Harold G. Schaeffer, with his business partner Arthur L. Powell, developed many of the best-known malls in the country, including the King of Prussia Mall, the largest shopping mall for retailing in the United States. Adele K. Schaeffer, a graduate of the College, has served on the boards of many leading Philadelphia institutions. At Penn she is Trustee Emerita of the University, having played leadership roles for the School of Dental Medicine and the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, serving as chair of the Board of Overseers for both organizations. Adele established the Adele K. Schaeffer Trustee Scholarship, served as President of the Society of the College of the University of Pennsylvania (the Alumni Board of the School of Arts and Sciences), and at the time of the University’s 250th Anniversary chaired a committee overseeing commemorative gifts. For her outstanding service to the University of Pennsylvania, Adele was awarded the highest alumni honor at Penn, the Alumni Award of Merit.
