Meet our executive board members

Derek is a 2nd year PhD student in the Biostatistics program. His work focuses on developing statistical methods for analyzing how complex biological systems change with time. Outside of work, Derek enjoys board games, particularly watching complex board states change with time, as well as baking and folk dance.

Julia is a 3rd year Ph.D. candidate in the CAMB Gene Therapy and Vaccines section. She studies how we can optimize in vitro and in vivo model systems for therapeutic CRISPR base editing screens of cardiometabolic disease. Outside of lab, Julia likes to play the violin, bari saxophone, and many other instruments. She also likes to crochet and play Hollow Knight until way too late at night. She loves pickles. 

Jessalyn is a third year Ph.D. candidate in the CAMB Gene Therapy and Vaccines section. She studies how precise CRISPR gene editing can be used to modulate gene expression to treat rare genetic diseases like Duchenne muscular dystrophy. When she’s not treating some cells, she’s treating herself, by playing the flute in the Philadelphia Freedom Band, Philly’s LGBTQ symphonic band. She can also be found making linoleum block prints at the Clark Park Farmer’s market and biking or running on the Schuylkill River trail when the weather is nice.
