PMACS, OVPR, and ISC Host NIST 800-171 Town Hall

On August 7, 2025, Li-San Wang, associate vice dean for research computing, hosted a town hall on NIST 800-171 with representatives from Penn Medicine Academic Computing Services (PMACS), the Office of Research Services (ORS), and Information Systems & Computing (ISC).

Mike Moran, of Penn Medicine Cybersecurity, provided an overview of the new security requirements for working with any data that Penn receives from one of twenty controlled access repositories. Jessie Buchanan, of ORS, reviewed specifics of the shared responsibility framework between faculty, research staff, ORS, and the IT community. James Renfro, of ISC, spoke about the new secure research enclave that has been established to provide the research community with Penn's first location for working with NIST 800-171 data. Finally, Nate DiGiorgio, of PMACS, provided an update on the progress toward addressing NIST 800-171 compliance in PSOM's high performance computing cluster.

Researchers looking to initiate the onboarding process can do so by submitting a request with ORS.

If you have any questions, you may contact a PMACS SIO for more information.
