Web Design Standards

The purpose of this document is to outline the design and branding standards required of all web pages within the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (PSOM) website as well as PSOM-affiliated sites which may be hosted elsewhere. Website administrators must ensure that both the logo for the Perelman School of Medicine and any text within their pages that reference the School are up to date.

PSOM Logos

Sites affiliated with the Perelman School of Medicine must display the official PSOM logo prominently on all pages. The logo may not be altered from its original form. Neither its dimensions nor its colors may not be distorted, and it may not be displayed smaller than 60 pixels in height. It must be placed in the upper left-hand corner of the page for brand consistency and should link back to the Perelman School of Medicine homepage.

PMACS has made the official web version of the logo available at a central public location. We strongly encourage you to point to it in this location rather than copying it to a separate location.

Non-PSOM Sites Affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania or Penn Medicine

Non-PSOM organizations may house their websites on a PSOM-hosted web server so long as they can demonstrate a significant affiliation with PSOM -- e.g., organizations which are based in PSOM, but oversee or provide service to people outside of PSOM. Dean's office approval may be necessary. Those groups' sites must be branded with one of the following, as appropriate:

  • official Penn logo
  • official Penn department/division/program logo, approved by University Communications
  • official Penn Medicine logo
  • official Penn Medicine department/division logo, approved by Penn Medicine Marketing
  • PSOM logo co-branded with another school's official logo (e.g., CHOP) as appropriate
  • other organization logo only under special circumstances -- must be approved by the Office of the Dean

All PSOM, Penn Medicine, and Penn logos must never be altered from their original form. Their dimensions may not be distorted and they may not be displayed smaller than 60 pixels in height. The logo must be placed in the upper left-hand corner of the page for brand consistency and should link back to the appropriate organization.

For the latest Penn logos and rules of use, consult the Penn Web Style Guide.

For information on Penn Medicine branding standards and access to official logos, see the Penn Medicine Logo site.

Secondary Logos / Motifs

Departments, centers, programs, and other organizations within PSOM, the University of Pennsylvania, or Penn Medicine that have their own distinct logo or graphic motif are allowed to display them on their website so long as they are clearly secondary to the main organizational branding described above. They must appear separate from organizational branding and can never be combined with an institutional logo.

Accessibility

In keeping with University requirements, all PSOM websites must be WCAG 2.1, Level AA-compliant.
