Job Description:

The Spine Outcome Research Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Data Scientist to join our team. Under the supervision of Dr. Jang Won Yoon, the selected candidate will play a critical role in conducting data-driven research related to spine outcomes. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of spinal disorders.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with researchers and clinicians to develop research questions and hypotheses related to spine outcomes.
  • Design and implement data science strategies to analyze large and complex datasets, including electronic health records, clinical trials, and patient-reported outcomes.
  • Apply machine learning algorithms and AI techniques to extract meaningful insights and patterns from the data.
  • Develop data visualization tools and dashboards to effectively communicate research findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Conduct statistical analyses and generate reports to support research publications and grant applications.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and related fields, and apply this knowledge to enhance research methodologies.

Qualifications:

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Biostatistics, or a related discipline. Ph.D. candidates are preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in data science, data visualization, and machine learning algorithm/AI-related research.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB for data analysis and algorithm development.
  • Experience working with large datasets, preferably in a healthcare or medical research setting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data and generate meaningful insights.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and present research findings.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods and tools commonly used in healthcare research.
  • Familiarity with databases, SQL, and data management practices.
  • Publication record in relevant scientific journals or conferences is a plus.
