Overview

There are important associations between metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity with manifestations of cardiovascular disease such as coronary heart disease and heart failure.  However, the molecular mechanisms linking metabolic and cardiovascular disease remain incompletely understood.  At Penn there are substantial number of investigators working on aspects of the interconnections between metabolic and cardiovascular disease, including basic laboratory research as well as translational science and clinical investigation. 

Collaborative interactions in this area have been greatly facilitated by the relocation of the Institute for Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism (IDOM) to the 12th floor and the Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) to the 11th floor of the Translational Research Center (TRC).  In this Symposium, invited Penn speakers will present on a range of topics linking metabolic to cardiovascular disease.  In addition, Dr. Daniel Kelly from the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and a world authority on cardiac metabolism, will give the keynote lecture.  The event will be an authoritative update on aspects of the intersection of metabolic and cardiovascular disease and provide a clear demonstration of the collaborative interactions among Penn investigators in this important area of biomedicine.
