The Identification of School-age Eye problems Evaluation (ISEE) Program

The Identification of School-age Eye problems Evaluation (ISEE) program is a multi-center, multidisciplinary study to compare the effectiveness of vision screening using both traditional (visual acuity [VA] and stereoacuity) and technology/instrument-based tests (e.g. autorefractors and photorefractors) for identification of school-age children at risk for significant vision problems (SVP) and in need of an eye exam. This feasibility study will refine methods and develop a Manual of Procedures and Protocol for the planned, future ISEE UG1 proposal. The findings from ISEE will help inform future screening guidelines and policies.

Specific Aims

  1. Document enrollment potential: [A] Establish that our clinical center can enroll, screen and examine 100 children ages 5 to 13 years.
  2. Perform a small feasibility study (each screening test completed by 100 eligible children) to optimize and refine study procedures (training, certification, screening, data collection, data monitoring, data analysis), and develop procedures to facilitate rapid, accurate lay screener interpretation (pass/refer) of screening results.
