Data Backup Information

The HPC system houses 2 Petabytes of disk storage.  Backup of this large volume of data, especially rapidly changing data such as those undergoing parallel analysis, is challenging.  For this reason, no HPC disk systems are backed-up by default.  This includes all data storage locations such as home/personal folders, lab folders, shared folders, etc.  The disk system is a robust platform that allows for multiple disk failures without data loss.  However, users requiring an additional layer of data protection can take advantage of the HPC tape archiving system to provide several more data copies to insure against accidental deletion, corruption, or other failures.

The HPC tape archiving system is charged at a rate of $0.015/GB/month.  This charge includes two full copies of the data kept on tape.  Any HPC users that would like to setup additional data protection, please contact the HPC team at psom-pmacshpc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.
