Our pilot study at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania showed that people with higher levels of support from friends and family during their recovery were more likely to reach their activity goals and less likely to have difficulty with other daily activities.
A summary of our pilot study (called "MOVE IT") with 232 participants that was conducted at HUP from 2018-2019.
The figure shows that all participants in the study increased their daily steps after hospital discharge. The first graph "A" shows results for all participants together and the second graph "B" shows that intervention participants who had more social support had the biggest increase.
The figure shows the proportion of participants who experienced a decline (decrease) in their ability to function independently at home. The first graph "A" shows that intervention patients recovered function faster (lower % of decline is better). The second graph "B" shows that intervention patients also recovered the ability to walk longer distances without difficulty at a faster rate (again, lower % is better).
