Goals of the Internship
The goals of the SH-SIP are for students to:
- Examine their personal experiences, attitudes and beliefs regarding religion/spirituality
- Develop skills for eliciting and responding to the spiritual/religious resources and concerns of patients
- Gain knowledge of how attitudes and beliefs about religion/spirituality impact physician behavior
- Develop approaches for processing their reactions to loss and grief
- Be exposed to research regarding spirituality and health
- Learn about major spiritual/religious traditions
- Learn how physicians integrate their spiritual/religious values into medical practice
- Appreciate the interdisciplinary dimensions of spiritual care as provided by physicians, nurses, social workers and spiritual providers (chaplains, community clergy)
