Goals of the Internship

The goals of the SH-SIP are for students to:

  • Examine their personal experiences, attitudes and beliefs regarding religion/spirituality
  • Develop skills for eliciting and responding to the spiritual/religious resources and concerns of patients
  • Gain knowledge of how attitudes and beliefs about religion/spirituality impact physician behavior
  • Develop approaches for processing their reactions to loss and grief
  • Be exposed to research regarding spirituality and health
  • Learn about major spiritual/religious traditions
  • Learn how physicians integrate their spiritual/religious values into medical practice
  • Appreciate the interdisciplinary dimensions of spiritual care as provided by physicians, nurses, social workers and spiritual providers (chaplains, community clergy)
