Dear PSOM 2025 Matriculating Students,

Welcome to PSOM!

On behalf of the Undergraduate Medical Education Leadership Team (UMELT), I am excited to extend a heartfelt welcome to each of you. We can't wait to meet you and accompany you on this incredible and transformative journey toward becoming a physician!

As a former Penn medical student, intern, resident, and fellow (and now primary care general internist), I can assure you that PSOM is a fantastic place to learn medicine. You are now part of a vibrant, intellectually rich community dedicated to excellence in medical education, research, clinical care and service. Here at PSOM we are committed to fostering a learning environment of curiosity, compassion and collaboration. You will learn from world-class faculty, work alongside remarkable peers, and care for patients who will teach you so much.

There are endless opportunities to enrich your education, from research projects, volunteer experiences in community clinics, student interest groups, cultural affinity groups, areas of concentration, dual degrees, and so much more! It truly feels like being a kid in a candy shop, with endless possibilities waiting for you. You’ll have a strong support system to guide you through it all, starting with your Advisory Dean, whom you’ll meet on your very first day. Our team is here to guide you, whether you are exploring a new research passion, defining career goals or seeking wellness support.

I still remember my own nerves the summer before starting medical school. I was anxious about fitting in, unsure about not having a traditional science background, and concerned that my undergraduate college didn’t historically send many students to Penn. I was concerned I might not be smart enough. I wondered if I would find a friend group, be able to maintain outside hobbies and interests, and have the time to see friends and family.

Maybe you aren’t as nervous as I was, but if you are. . . let me reassure you. Feeling nervous is completely normal! Medical school is a big leap. But remember, you are not alone. We are here for you, every step of the way. I found my place at Penn and never left. Why? Because of the amazing community of students and faculty, the incredible spirit of collaboration, and the unwavering commitment to excellence. It’s truly inspiring! You belong here, and we are invested in your growth not only as future physicians, leaders, and advocates, but also as individuals.

So, welcome once again! I am genuinely excited to get to know you and can’t wait to welcome you in person! I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey to becoming a physician that will advance science and discovery, care for patients and communities, and lead in your areas of interest.

You'll find me on the 6th floor. If you have any questions or feedback at any time, I, along with UMELT, are always available to you!

Warmest regards,

Jen Kogan, MD

Vice Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education
