Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Perl studies oncogenic signal transduction in acute myelogenous leukemia. Using a focus upon the phosphotidyl inositol 3' kinase (PI3K)/AKT/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, he has performed clinical trials examining the strategy of inhibiting mTOR to promote chemotherapy response in AML. Laboratory correlation science on these studies was also performed by Dr. Perl, leading to improved methods for measuring mTOR activation in clinical samples via intracellular flow cytometry. Dr. Perl is currently exploring the use of flow cytometry for pharmacodynamic monitoring of signal transduction inhibitor response in hematologic malignancies as well as preclinical drug screening in cellular and murine xenotransplantation models.

Description of Clinical Expertise

Dr. Perl specializes in the care of patients with acute leukemia (AML and ALL), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and CML.
