Opportunities

clinical students
- Please describe your activities while abroad (eg, seeing
patients, clinical research, public health project, etc.):
I researched euthanasia policy in the Netherlands. I arranged
meetings with attendings in the various departments of the
hospital, members of the National Health Ministry, and faculty
in the law school and philosophy department.
- Please describe the range of activities available,
in addition to yours:
My project and preceptor allowed me to take this project
whereever I wanted. The sky's the limit, as long as it's
within 6 weeks of course.
- Would you recommend this institution to other Penn
medical students? Why?
Yes. Fantastic summer in Europe.
- What did you not like?
Half the country seems to go on vacation in the summer months,
so faculty can be hard to find and talk to person to person.
But you make do.
- Is there an application process for this institution?
How does one arrange a visit? Are there important dates
to know about?
Yes, through PennMed and OIP. They will send out emails
asking for applications.
- What costs were associated with the trip, other than
transportation. Please include institutional fees, housing
costs, food, etc.:
The University of Groningen provides about 1200 USD
for the entire time, including airfare, housing in the dorms,
food, etc. It's not enough to break even, but PennMed was
able to supplement another 500 USD. It's tight but you can
get by, or expect to use your own money, esp. if you travel
to other parts of Europe on the weekends.
- Did you receive funding for this trip? If so, from
whom and for how much? Please provide important information,
such as contacts, application procedure, and due dates:
Look above.
- Would you agree to be contacted by other students interested
in this site? If so, please give your name and contact information:
