- Please describe your activities while abroad (eg, seeing
patients, clinical research, public health project, etc.):
I worked with a group that provides financial, educational,
and skill support to country folk in the mountains of Nicaragua
who suffered from Hurricaine Mitch. We organized and assisted
in latrine and potable water construction projects, gave
workshops on leadership, basic village health care, and
cleanliness strategies to avoid diarrhea, etc. I also was
treated as a 'visiting doctor' to give consultations (which
I tried to avoid, but couldn't entirely evade).
- Please describe the range of activities available,
in addition to yours:
There were projects throughout Nicaragua focusing on different
locations and needs, all centered on public health and disease
prevention strategies involving educating and capacitating
the people to improve and maintain their own health.
- Would you recommend this institution to other Penn
medical students? Why?
Yes. It was a great experience to get to know the people
of Nicaragua on a personal level and to help them help themselves.
- What did you not like?
Yes. It was a great experience to get to know the people
of Nicaragua on a personal level and to help them help themselves.
- Is there an application process for this institution?
How does one arrange a visit? Are there important dates
to know about?
Just email the above address. There's no application process,
but they won't believe you're actually coming until you
truly arrive. Don't be surprised at that! They get a lot
of volunteers who cancel.
- What costs were associated with the trip, other than
transportation. Please include institutional fees, housing
costs, food, etc.:
They will house you. You will have to pay for food,
but it is quite inexpensive and you can either pay someone
to cook for you or pitch in with the other team members
to buy food and cook it together. You must pay for airfare.
There are not many expenses and people will help you with
transportation, etc.
- Did you receive funding for this trip? If so, from
whom and for how much? Please provide important information,
such as contacts, application procedure, and due dates:
- Would you agree to be contacted by other students interested
in this site? If so, please give your name and contact information:
