Activities available:
Health infrastructure
Opportunities
appropriate for:
pre-clinical students
clinical students
- Please describe your activities while abroad (eg, seeing
patients, clinical research, public health project, etc.):
I spent my time learning about how AMC provided relief and
strategic planning for around 40 communities along the banks
of the Coco River.
- Please describe the range of activities available,
in addition to yours:
AMC's projects vary widely with site and with the different
projects that are running at any one time.
- Would you recommend this institution to other Penn
medical students? Why?
I would recommend this to students who are very independent
and comfortable working in a situation with very little
structure (and sometimes not that much to do). If you like
structure and supervision, this might not be for you.
- What did you not like?
I felt a bit isolated and underutilized during my time.
- Is there an application process for this institution?
How does one arrange a visit? Are there important dates
to know about?
Belinda Forbes, an American living in Nicaragua, is the
international liason at Accion Medica. She is a wonderful
and candid person, and would be the right person to talk
to.
- What costs were associated with the trip, other than
transportation. Please include institutional fees, housing
costs, food, etc.:
Food and housing were additional though minimal costs.
- Did you receive funding for this trip? If so, from
whom and for how much? Please provide important information,
such as contacts, application procedure, and due dates:
I received funding from Frontline Medicine (check w/
Dr. Larson) and from Suite 100.
- Would you agree to be contacted by other students interested
in this site? If so, please give your name and contact information:
