Summer Internship Program

The summer internship program is an intensive 8-week experience as an introduction to different career opportunities in oncology, specializing in melanoma and other skin cancers. The goal of the program is to expand a diverse pipeline of students interested in pursuing a career in biomedical sciences. The program is currently being offered to undergraduate students at our partnering institution, Randolph-Macon College. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented communities to apply including first-generation college students, women, and people of color.

Participants of the program can expect the following:

  • orientation into melanoma (prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship)
  • rotation in a research lab
  • clinic shadowing with providers (physicians, NPs, PAs, RNs, and others)
  • human biobanking research
  • clinical data entry and management
  • clinical trials research
  • attending research & clinical conferences and seminars

Students will have the opportunity to meet with a multidisciplinary group of faculty and staff members to gain exposure to various career paths in basic science and clinical/translational medicine. The internship culminates in a presentation by each intern on a topic of their choice.
