Maha N. Syed, MBBS

Dr. Syed received her medical degree from the University of Health Sciences in Pakistan. Subsequently, she went on to pursue her clinical epidemiology research training at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. She is currently pursuing a post-doctoral research fellowship with Dr. Gelfand and received the National Psoriasis Foundation fellowship award to advance her research work in investigating underlying co-morbidities in psoriasis. Additionally, she has hands-on clinical experience with patients from the Penn Medicine outpatient settings and leads/assists in multi-institutional coordinating efforts for the PCORI-funded LITE Study, vascular inflammation in psoriasis-apremilast (VIP-A ) trial, genetic mutations in atopic dermatitis trial and cardiovascular disease prevention for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (CP3) study. Her research interests include patient-centered outcomes and comparative effectiveness research in patients with immune-mediated diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

Sonia is a current medical student at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally from California, she is currently pursuing a research fellowship with Dr. Gelfand to look at the interaction of psoriasis with systemic comorbidities. She is interested in the intersection of internal medicine and dermatology. Her research interests include patient-centered outcomes and the epidemiology of chronic disease.

NPF-Funded Research Grantee - William B. Song
Will is a medical student at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to medical school, Will gained experience in health policy and health services research through his work at the Margolis Center for Health Policy, the National Academy of Medicine, and through his degree in Economics at Duke University. His current interests include improving health equity and understanding healthcare disparities for people with psoriasis, topics which he will continue to pursue as a research fellow from 2023-2024 with the support of Dr. Joel Gelfand and funding from the National Psoriasis Foundation. In the future, he hopes to continue to investigate important scientific questions as an independent investigator alongside his clinical work in order to improve the lives of those who suffer from psoriasis and other chronic skin diseases.

Brooke studied Biology and Mathematics at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. She has always had a passion for science and research from working at Columbia University in New York City on various clinical trials to her experience in continuing medical education. Brooke completed her Master's in Public Health at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health with a focus in biostatistics and epidemiology and is working on her PhD in data science. Brooke is currently the lead coordinator for the LITE Study comparing home vs. office based phototherapy for the treatment of psoriasis. Her research interests include chronic disease epidemiology and patient-centered outcomes.

Anabel graduated summa cum laude from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and Liberal Studies, and a minor in Biological Sciences. As a clinical research assistant, she aids in coordinating studies in the Gelfand Clinical Research Lab as well as other studies within the Department of Dermatology. Her research interests include patient-centered outcomes and bridging the evidence-practice gap.

Jennifer studied Public Health in her undergraduate career and received her Master’s in Public Health from West Chester University. She is currently a clinical research coordinator for the Acne Spironolactone vs. Doxycycline trial; works with the qualitative research team on the CP3 study and supports the lead CRC on the LITE study. Jennifer’s research interests include health disparities among rural and urban populations, bioethics and health policy.

Aakriti is a clinical research coordinator from Pittsburgh, PA. She went to the University of Pittsburgh for her undergraduate degree where she majored in Neuroscience, minored in Chemistry, and completed a certificate in the Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. Aakriti has engaged in diverse experiences in public health, medicine, and research (basic/applied and epidemiological). Her research interests include patient-centered outcomes and comparative clinical effectiveness.
